From Mexico: Solidarity with the Students of the UPR (University of Puerto Rico)

Victory to the UPR students!

By Grupo Internacionalista

Today, 10 March 2011, students at the southern campus of the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH-Sur, a school belonging to the baccalaureate system of UNAM, the National University of Mexico) devoted a day of struggle to the courageous students of the University of Puerto Rico who, since last year, have been carrying out a hard struggle against the privatization onslaught unleashed by the colonial government.

In the framework of days of struggle to celebrate International Working Women’s Day, the Comité Internacionalista of CCH-Sur organized a forum about the struggle in Mexico and internationally for women’s basic right to free abortion on demand as part of high-quality medical care for all.

More than 60 students participated in the event, and up to a hundred listened to the performance of son jarocho (a Mexican music genre merging black and indigenous musical influences) and hip-hop songs performed by communist musicians belonging to the Revolutionary Hip-hop Association (ARH, an artistic organization fraternally linked to the Grupo Internacionalista).

Various speakers gave greetings to the Puerto Rican students in struggle against the imposition of tuition charges of $800, and the crowd applauded their courageous struggle. A teacher who is a member of the Grupo Internacionalista underlined that the privatization onslaught that the UPR students are facing today is part of a package of economic policies dictated by international financial bodies like the IMF and World Bank to even further restrict access to higher education by the sons and daughters of the working class.

As is occurring today in Puerto Rico, a decade ago the Mexican government tried to impose tuition fees at UNAM, as a clear measure of class exclusion, which would force tens of thousands of students to leave school. In 1999-2000, the UNAM students responded with a tenacious strike that continued for ten months. Despite ending with the arrest of a thousand students and the massive police occupation of the university, the strike made the bourgeois government retreat from its plans. Thus today, UNAM students still pay no tuition.

Key during the 1999-2000 UNAM strike in Mexico, and key today in the case of the University of Puerto Rico, was support to the student strike by important unions, such as the Mexican Electrical Workers Union (SME) and the unions of the university workers at UNAM and the Autonomous Metropolitan University. For the last year and a half, the SME has been the target of a ferocious union-busting attack by the government of Mexican president Felipe Calderón.

A young woman activist emphasized that the fight to establish the basic democratic right to education, whether in Mexico City, New York or San Juan, Puerto, as well as the fight for women's emancipation and to put an end once and for all to every kind of oppression, is, in the final analysis, the struggle for international socialist revolution. A comrade who performed a hip-hop song ended with this call to struggle: “From the students of CCH Sur / to the students of the UPR / a fighting salute of proletarian solidarity / of internationalist solidarity / of struggle for permanent revolution.”

Maybe certain intelectual-left pessimism is coming from their still diverse neglecting of social, internet, networks and, in general, Web 2.0 If young generations, digital natives, are using so much all that 2.0 parafernalia, we, as, still, digital inmigrants, have already all the advantages in front of us, for a global symbiotic impulse towards web 2.0.

It would be stupid to neglect the work, global work,of all left movements under anti-globalization long processes. But it is now time, and the greatest opportunity, to return to globalization in that way, just as globalization across internet (2.0) has no, almost, relation with the idea many left-intelctuals have of internet. Formal powers have fed our brains with the bad side of internet. People surrounded still almost by internet 1.0, still have the same idea of global equilibrium of powers, that 10 years ago.

The number of blogs, the increase in social networks, the demostrated main role of web 2.0 in jasmine revolutions...

There are three last "main" coins where people follow abduced by the all norms of the ideology 1.0.

Three:

ONE: conventional classrooms, millions across our planet...

TWO: Mass Car Transit... ¿Some one is already designing a "google earth" for showing, in real time, the km of traffic jams in any place?

THREE: Conventional Mass Media

Our hipotesis:

It is enough reducing 80% the cars circulating on the planet, to easily dream with a gradual process of closing all nuclear plants in some years...

By Authoritarism, Science Becomes Religion

As religion is a set of beliefs, plis, calculate the volume of things a scientist must memorize in their university formation.

Memorizing and beliefs are hand with hand. All the knowledges transmitted only by theoreticaly lectures are more religion than science. The geometrical and fuctional structure of the mass, in a church, and of a lecture is just the same. Authoritarianism is intensively administered in 21th century hierarchical classrooms, where maybe some guy is talking against authoritarianism...

Authoritarism is the power , for example, of curricula. As Author concept must change in brutal terms, because under the vision from sensosphere, you, wich say yourself an author, are not the author, but a piece, a chip, of a authority all made by pieces by you and by me, that can be called sensosphere, ecosystem, ecobrain, world, god (pantheistic), common sense. In fact all that resistance from scientists to accept Gaia Theory, whats it is saying to us is precisely that actual 21th century scientists following so close, so blocked, epistemologicaly, to evidences that tried to pass their consensual control, as theories, but that Gaia Theory is not a theory at all, just your senses say you are sensing directly what theory say. When that theory tried to pass the rubicon of the authority of the fathers of the church of science, they stupidely say:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Is science a religion?

for many years i was of the opinion that science was a religion. Science provides an attempt to explain the mysteries of the universe, proposes its own creation story and non-provable ideas, (a theory, by definition, cannot be proven, only disproven.)

i was hardened in my assurance for years until someone pointed out to me that in its purest form, as des Cartes intended, it did not preach a code of ethical conduct, only examined the evidence. in contrast to religion, it recommended a healthy dose of doubt instead of blind faith.

modern science doesn't seem to follow these guidelines. it preaches blind denial and dismissal of opposing viewpoints without investigation, and most scientific groups require a specified code of ethical conduct.

By definition, doesn't this mean that modern science has become a religion?

Additional Details

an example of science preaching blind denial: try to discuss the subject of magic with any scientist. i have, and the vast majority dismiss it without even considering subjecting specified claims to scientific scrutiny. what is the reason for this dismissal? "Because its magic"

note here that much of what comprises modern physics, chemistry and several other sciences were considered 'magic' in past generations, but when finally given serious scientific scrutiny were accepted.
